The Department’s NSAI Liaison Unit is the primary point of contact between the Department and the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI). It carries out the Department’s oversight role in relation to NSAI’s Exchequer financing, staffing and recruitment and corporate governance, as well as providing policy support to the NSAI on standards and other areas of EU legislation. The unit also provides all necessary administrative support to the Minister on matters related to the NSAI.
The NSAI was established in April 1997 as an autonomous body and has responsibility for the development of standards in Ireland, both European and national. It formulates standards in consultation with industry - these can be purchased from its headquarters in Santry, Dublin. It also provides a certification service which operates on a `not for profit' basis in accordance with the stringent EN 45000 series of European standards, and the global ISO Conformity Assessment Procedures. Certification issued by NSAI is recognised worldwide. As the national certification body, NSAI has been designated by the Irish Government as a "Notified Body" in connection with EU Directives leading to the issue of certificates for use of the "CE" Mark of Conformity.
The NSAI also has responsibility for the Legal Metrology Service (LMS) which exercises regulation making and control functions with regard to measurements and the National Metrology Laboratory (NML) which has been transferred from Enterprise Ireland.
The NSAI Board, which was first appointed in April 1997, determines the broad policies of the Authority, in accordance with the functions assigned to it under Section 7 (1) of the National Standards Authority of Ireland Act, 1996.
The Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation appoints twelve of thirteen members of the Board. The Chief Executive Officer of NSAI is automatically a member of the Board of NSAI. The Board is comprised of private and public sector representatives.
