Government's vision for the Irish economy is to be competitive, dynamic and innovative - Perry

Irish businesses need to embrace ICT and supply chain process changes to seize opportunity to supply internationally sought after products and services

Addressing the GS1 Ireland’s National Conference this morning [Friday] Minister for Small Business, John Perry T.D., said “The Government has taken, and continues to take, tough and decisive action to stabilise the economy.

“The latest economic indicators clearly show that our efforts are yielding positive results. In particular, the latest published indicators for the export sectors of Agri-foods, Pharmaceuticals, Software - and other indigenous products and services - are all positive.  Many of these sectors increasingly rely on Global Standard products to support efficiency and excellence in their respective supply chain management systems.

“The Government’s vision for the Irish economy is to be competitive, dynamic and innovative.

“Therefore the Mission of my Department is to support the creation of valuable jobs by promoting the development of a competitive business environment in which enterprises will operate to high standards and grow in sustainable markets.

“Irish businesses need to put best practices in place in order to survive and prosper.

“GS1 is dedicated to the design and implementation of global standards and solutions to improve the efficiency and visibility of supply and demand chains globally and across sectors.

“These global standards enable the efficiency and visibility of supply and demand chains globally, empowering companies to grow and thrive.

“Ireland has an enviable asset in its agricultural land, climate and food culture.  We lead on the world-stage by producing high quality and safe food.  Capitalising on these assets and growing our international reputation is a key objective for the sector in terms of long-term survival and opportunity.

“In helping enterprises to develop their own potential, having a safe, secure, compliant supply chain with full traceability and recall capabilities, in line with international standards will be essential to enabling this potential.

“GS1 standards can assist organisations in ensuring consumers find accurate, up-to-date information about their products and meet the challenge of satisfying consumer demand for information through mobile and online channels.”
